There are many good reasons to purchase locally grown, organic (i.e., chemical-free) food.  It supports your health with superior nutrition and often tastes better than food that travels many days to get to your home. In a larger, ecological context, it also supports those farms that contribute to the health of our ecosystem—specifically, to our soil, water and air—rather than the large factory farms that cause further damage. Lastly, it helps to sustain the meadows, pastures, orchards and fields that we have come to appreciate as the rural landscape of the Hudson Valley.

While the immediate area of the Hudson Highlands is no longer a farming area, our accompanying list of local food sources shows you the numerous providers of superior quality food right on our doorstep, including a variety of fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats and poultry.

A few guidelines:

• Choose local and, if possible, organic products

• Eat fruits and vegetables that are seasonally available

• Urge your supermarkets to follow Foodtown’s example and stock local produce.
